Information for Teachers

OceansMicro provides an interactive, dynamic exploration of the complicated world of marine microorganisms. This one-hour program emphasizes the importance of plankton, citizen science, and marine conservation. A virtual class, OceansMicro is designed for high school and middle school students.

The structure is as follows: a pre-survey to provoke thought and assess prior knowledge, brief class instruction and introduction to plankton, high definition livestream of specimen of seawater, interactive discussions lead by a trained interpreter and plankton specialist, and a follow-up survey.

Over the course of the program, students will gain a working knowledge of oceanic plankton, common phytoplankton and zooplankton in Monterey Bay, the importance of plankton in the ecosystem, and the impact of citizen science. To conclude the lesson, students will be encouraged to participate in local citizen science initiatives and provided resources for their continued learning.

The sessions we conduct can be tailored around existing classroom curriculum as needed.
