Life in a drop of seawater.

What is OceansMicro?

OceansMicro provides in-class educational programs for high school and middle school students, as a supplement to existing biology curriculums.

Our mission is to deepen the understanding of critical microorganisms in the world’s oceans in order to inspire conservation and promote science education.

Life and Death

We take seawater from Monterey Bay, put a drop under a powerful microscope with a camera attached, and then we live-stream the images in high-definition to any internet connected device using Zoom.

During a typical one-hour program, a knowledgeable plankton expert interprets what the students are seeing in real time, leads discussions, and answers questions.

Students learn about what plankton are, their role and importance to life on Earth, and why they are critical to conserving the oceans to keep plankton populations healthy.

We provide pre- and post-class materials, as well as mechanisms for students to further explore ocean science and conservation.

Why is plankton important?

Plankton, which includes microorganisms such as phytoplankton and zooplankton, are rarely seen by the naked eye. Because they exist at such a microscopic scale, they are easy to gloss over, they are rarely thought about by the general public or learned about by students in school.

Phytoplankton provide approximately 50% of the oxygen we breathe. Without them, life on Earth wouldn’t exist as we know it. They also absorb huge amount of CO2, helping to clean our atmosphere.

These organisms are at the base of the food web in the ocean and, thus, play a critical role in providing food for millions of people.

Plankton are easily affected by global/ocean warming and chemical changes in the oceans, such as ocean acidification.
